"You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you.
And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke." - Arthur Plotnik

Writing a novel is hard enough (trust us, we know). You don't need the added pressure of combing through every line of your manuscript for typos and plot holes.

Hence the creation of the almighty editor.

Unfortunately, as beneficial as they are, editors are often too expensive for debut and self-published authors, and trying to find one who won't milk you for all you're worth while still delivering quality services is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Hence us. S&J Editors.

We're a pair of indie authors who know firsthand the struggles of self-editing and scrimping for a good editor. Which is why want to provide you with the high quality and efficient service you'd expect from an expensive editor with the low prices of...well...that nonexistent editor we mentioned up there.

And we're honest. We won't make you fish for a price quote or charge you unnecessary upfront costs. We won't tear your novel to shreds (we know how much that hurts) or sugarcoat things. Instead, we're open about our flat rates (you can find them here) and we're committed to refining your work - not altering it.

So go ahead. Hang around our site for a while or shoot us a quick question in the chat box. Calculate and compare prices. Learn a little more about what you're looking for and where your manuscript is at.

Then, when you're ready, we'll be here! We can't wait to start working with you!

Developmental Edits

The most intense form of editing, developmental edits dive deep into the heart of your book and refines elements like plot, characters, themes, and tone to ensure that you have a stable structure and pleasant experience for your readers.

Line Edits

Line editing takes a close look at each individual sentence of your book to help polish your prose and refine your style, as well as correct grammar and mechanics, ensuring that your writing is as structured as your story.

Copy Edits

Copy editing, also known as proofreading, combs your manuscript for typos, incorrect grammar, and misspelled or misused words to guarantee not a single typo remains before your book is released.

When is my manuscript ready for editing?

We're glad you asked! We've put together a short booklet and checklist to help you determine when your manuscript is ready for editing and to prepare for that process! You can download it by clicking the button below!

Contact Us

We know that handing over your book baby to someone else is an overwhelming prospect, and that process can often be stressful or complex. Which is why we're dedicated to making that step as simple and painless as possible. If you're ready to submit your work to us, we have a form that includes all the information we need, as well as the ability to directly upload a sample of your work. Including a sample allows us to get a taste of what we'll be working with and gives you an idea of our editing style. Once you submit your query form, one of us will be in touch with you to give you a price estimate and accept the full manuscript, if you're ready!

Writing a nonfiction work? We'd love to work with you too, but we have less experience in that area. Feel free to contact us about your nonfiction project and we will refer you to another editor if it’s not the right fit for us.

Not ready to commit to anything just yet? We totally understand, which is why you're welcome to shoot us a few questions or start a dialogue about payment, our content guidelines, our schedules, and more using the chat box to the side or the form below! We'd love to hear from you!
